Round the Buoy, almost…
We had a good turnout for the first race of the season with Carib, Daisy 3, Kermit, Jacana and Gazelle turning out. The consensus at the skippers meeting was a shortened course around Canoe Rock instead of U15. Once we were on the water the wind seemed to take the hint and make itself scarce. Gazelle was having trouble getting back to the start line but by shear providence, the wind turned right around and Gazelle was able to pull off a perfect dip start. The race was on with a light breeze filling in from the N which Daisy 3 was able to capitalize on taking over the lead about halfway to the first mark. At this point the wind became lighter and more variable and while Daisy 3 was taking wide tacks, Gazelle short tacked right up to Canoe Rock followed shortly by Kermit and Jacana. Carib seemed to have been caught in the current heading more NW and was having trouble staying with the group. At this point the wind had veered to S but so light that the fleet could not make way against the current. After almost an hour of holding station, with 4 boats in shouting distance, one by one they abandoned the race.
