John Quitzau Trophy Race

What a glorious day on the water. After an interesting start, expertly curated by Allan on Vital Spark, Daisy 3 took an early lead which was never relinquished. The breeze was light and steady from the W for a while, but as the fleet chased Daisy 3 down Swanson Channel, it slowly died just about the time we were being visited by at least 3 Orca Pods in succession, heading the opposite way. In the failing breeze, Gazelle lost all steerage and executed a pirouette as new wind made its presence felt from the SE. Daisy 3 was able to take advantage of the new wind first, consolidating a substantial lead with Gazelle the closest behind. At this point the fleet split with Whiteshell 2 and Velero taking a course along the Bluffs and Carib tacking over to Moresby. The wind held reasonable well for the remainder of the race, providing enough power to overcome a weakening tide, around Pt Fairfax, Imrie Island and finally U15 before the race across Swanson Channel to the finish. With the breeze slowly freshening, Daisy 3 initially decided to head towards Beaver Point ala Manfred, but switched back after a few minutes. With the breeze freshening and Daisy 3 entering the lee of Moet Point, Gazelle was able to reel in some of the lead, finishing a scant 15 minutes and 30 seconds behind the leader. The finish was Daisy 3, Gazelle, Whiteshell 2, Carib and Velero. Corrected time only managed to swap the fist two position giving Gazelle the cup. Season positions are now Whiteshell 2, Velero, Gazelle, Daisy 3, Carib, Gadgets and Kermit.

I sailed Carib close to the eastern shore of Moresby and found the wind direction allowed me to sail along it towards the south. Had to take a short tack to make it all the way. This let me get ahead a bit.
